Maduro Accused of Leading Venezuela’s “Cartel of the Suns” Drug Trafficking

New Evidence Alleges President’s Deep Involvement in Narco-Trafficking Ring

Newly unsealed court documents in the United States allege that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro played a key role in leading the “Cartel of the Suns”, a major drug trafficking organization. The indictment claims Maduro helped manage and ultimately lead the cartel as he consolidated power in Venezuela, using cocaine exports to “flood” the United States as a “weapon” against the country.

Explosive Allegations

According to the documents, the alleged intent of Maduro and other regime leaders to use cocaine exports as a weapon against the United States, which they considered an enemy, is one of the main reasons the Venezuelan government has remained in the drug trafficking business.

The indictment also states that while most South and Central American drug trafficking organizations have tried to withdraw from their role in exporting narcotics to the United States in an effort to avoid U.S. justice, the Cartel of the Suns, under Maduro’s leadership, prioritized the use of cocaine as a weapon against the United States, deciding to export as much cocaine as possible.

Maduro’s Direct Involvement

Among the activities directly attributed to Maduro in the indictment is his participation in negotiations over shipments of several tons of cocaine supplied by the FARC. U.S. authorities also accuse him of orchestrating the delivery of weapons to the guerrilla organization and coordinating with Central American countries to ship drugs to the United States through those countries.

Growth of Operations

The indictment alleges that Maduro’s involvement in the cartel’s operations continued even after he assumed the presidency of Venezuela. Drug shipments gradually increased, with the cartel establishing clandestine airstrips in the Venezuelan plains from where drug-laden planes would depart. Currently, experts estimate that the volume of cocaine exported to the United States and Europe by the Cartel of the Suns amounts to between 350 and 450 tons per year.

The newly unsealed court documents present a damning picture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s deep involvement in leading the “Cartel of the Suns” drug trafficking organization. By allegedly using cocaine exports as a “weapon” against the United States and expanding the cartel’s operations, Maduro is accused of prioritizing the interests of the criminal network over the wellbeing of the Venezuelan people. These explosive allegations further undermine the legitimacy of Maduro’s regime and raise serious concerns about the extent of narco-trafficking within the Venezuelan government.
